Providing Dental Treatment to Patients with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities

May 16, 2014

Thanks to a grant award from the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, Giving Circle of Hope, sixteen dental professionals and twenty individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) participated in a unique one-day clinic that was mutually beneficial in addressing unmet oral health needs.

This successful dental outreach clinic, co-sponsored by the Virginia Dental Association, was held at the Northern Virginia Training Center Dental Clinic and provided a unique opportunity for dental professionals to gain valuable practical experience in treating patients with ID/DD.

Patients with ID/DD are often underserved as they often lack access to dental treatment. This grant-funded program helped to address this need for access to dental services. Patients were recruited by our collaborators, the Arc of Northern Virginia and ServiceSource, and patients were then pre-screened and pre-scheduled based upon need and ability to treat. Patients received individualized dental services such as exams, x-rays, cleaning, fillings, extractions, scaling, etc.

See the following positive feedback we received from patients and their families and/or caregivers.

“This program is a blessing”

“It was a good opportunity to have this kind of dental treatment”

“Very friendly and attentive staff members”

“Teeth are shiny new! Thank you”

“Thank you so much. Words are not enough to convey our heartfelt appreciation for the services provided for the patients. Caregivers are so well trained and friendly. Thanks again”

“I had a great experience. Wisdom tooth that was infected was addressed appropriately. Thank you for taking care of me!”

“Dentist was very nice and did not hurt my teeth”

“Very thankful”

“The staff was awesome, and at the check-in, one of the ladies recognized my son. That was sweet”

Dental professionals attended a 1 hour lecture, provided by instructors Dr. James Schroeder DDS, MS, FACD and Dr. Ramineh Kangarloo DDS, during which participants received an overview of treating patients with ID/DD. The course then progressed into observation and assistance with establishing rapport with patients and actual treatment of patients while being mentored by skilled dentists with expertise in treating this population. The dentists and hygienists received 8 continuing education credits for participating in the 8 hour course. This course was beneficial to dental professionals as it helps prepare them for treating patients with ID/DD in their private practice offices in the region.
